Why Would I Need Dental Anesthesia in the South Bay?

Dental anesthesia may be necessary for a variety of reasons, including:
Pain management
Dental procedures can be uncomfortable or even painful. Dental anesthesia helps manage and reduce this pain, ensuring a more comfortable experience for the patient.
Anxiety relief
Many people experience anxiety or fear when visiting the dentist. Dental anesthesia can help alleviate this anxiety, allowing patients to relax and feel more at ease during their procedure.
Complex procedures
For more complex dental procedures, such as wisdom teeth removal or dental implant placement, dental anesthesia may be necessary to ensure the patient remains comfortable and the dentist can work efficiently.
Sensitive teeth
Some patients have sensitive teeth, making dental procedures more uncomfortable. Dental anesthesia can help numb the area, reducing sensitivity and discomfort during treatment.
Medical conditions
Patients with certain medical conditions may require dental anesthesia to ensure their safety and comfort during dental procedures. Conditions such as TMJ disorders or gag reflex issues may require specialized anesthesia techniques.
Childhood dental care
Children may require dental anesthesia for procedures such as tooth extractions. Anesthesia can help ensure that children remain comfortable and cooperative during these treatments.

How is Dental Anesthesia for Pain Relief administered?

Our team of experienced doctors will carefully evaluate your needs and determine the most appropriate anesthesia or pain relief technique for your procedure. Local anesthesia is commonly used for minor procedures, while general anesthesia may be recommended for more complex surgeries.

Local anesthesia involves using topical numbing cream followed by an injection to numb an area of your mouth. If this is the only form of anesthesia used during your procedure, then you may eat before, and you can drive yourself home after treatment.

Nitrous oxide is a gas that can be used to relieve anxiety during treatment. It is used in combination with local anesthetic and allows patients to still drive themselves home after the procedure.

IV sedation and general anesthesia are options for patients who would like to be asleep and not be aware of their procedure as it is happening. We will review pre-surgery instructions thoroughly with you before your surgery appointment and ask that you have a responsible adult drive you home after treatment.

Our oral surgeons are also proud to offer Exparel as an alternative to post-operative opioid pain medication. Exparel is a long-acting, non-addictive local anesthetic that can be given at the time of surgery to minimize opioid-dependent pain relief. It has been proven to be effective in reducing the need for postoperative narcotic pain medication in the first 72 hours after surgery.
